Understanding your British Shorthair’s behavior

In shortThe British Shorthair is a cat of floors and proximity: next to you, not on you. His recoil when lifted is character, not fear. The change in him is a cat who constantly demands contact, or who stops coming.

What defines them

A round cat with an owl’s gaze, the British Shorthair is calm, independent and discreet, with a strong attachment he shows by staying in the same room. He dislikes being carried or handled for long, prefers low surfaces and his habits. Not very active, he gains weight easily. His slightly flat face and fixed expression call for reading the tail and ears rather than the eyes. The British Longhair shares this character with a coat on top.

What matters when you read them

  • He stiffens or wriggles when lifted: his character. Put him down and he will come back to sit beside you.
  • He stays in the same room as you, at a distance: his kind of cuddle. Proximity is attachment.
  • He constantly demands contact: the change. In a British, that is worth noting.
  • He no longer comes at all, hides: the other change, often physical.

Three things that help

Leave him on the floor. Less carrying. He prefers arriving on his own, and he does if you do not force him.

Short play. Five minutes is enough, but every day. The British is not a sprinter, but he gains weight without play.

A low nest. He settles more than he jumps. A soft bed, near you, at his height.

Young, adult, senior

As a kitten he is playful and grows slowly, until age 3: make daily play a habit before laziness sets in. As an adult, weight is the key point, along with the heart, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy being known in the breed. As a senior, teeth, kidneys and joints. A British who no longer jumps on the sofa is talking about his joints or his weight.

Frequently asked questions

My British Shorthair does not like cuddles. Is he cold?

He likes cuddles in his way: short, chosen, often on the floor. The hand that lifts him bothers him, the hand that scratches his chin when he comes suits him. Let him set the rules.

He sleeps all the time. Is that normal?

It is a calm breed that sleeps a lot, but make sure he gets a play and hunting moment each day. A British who only gets up to eat gains weight, and excess weight is his main risk.

British Shorthair or Longhair, is the character different?

No, it is the same cat with or without long hair. The Longhair additionally needs regular brushing, especially under the collar and behind the legs, where the coat mats.
