Understanding your Russian Blue’s behavior

In shortThe Russian Blue chooses his people, one or two, and watches the others from afar. Hiding when the bell rings is often just him, not a drama. The change is a Russian Blue who suddenly becomes clingy with everyone, or who flees even his close people.

What defines them

An elegant cat with a silvery blue-gray coat and green eyes, the Russian Blue is calm, discreet and very sensitive. He bonds deeply with his small circle and is shy, sometimes fearful, with strangers and changes. He likes routine, high places to observe from, and hates shouting. An intelligent player, he learns fast, but at his own pace. His reserve makes him easy to misread: his caution gets taken for fear or indifference.

What matters when you read them

  • He vanishes when visitors arrive and returns when they leave: his functioning. Not trauma.
  • He is suddenly clingy with everyone, strangers included: the change. Look for what has changed.
  • He flees even you or hides for hours: the other change, often physical or strong stress.
  • He observes from high furniture, motionless: caution, not fear. Let him come.

Three things that help

Visitors, very gently. A place of his own when the bell rings, and visitors who ignore him. He observes before coming, or does not come.

A tight routine. The same hands, the same hours, the same places. The Russian Blue dislikes upheaval.

Low voices. He is very sensitive to noise and shouting. A calm home makes him present.

Young, adult, senior

As a kitten, socialize him early and gently to a variety of people, without forcing: that is the window to widen his circle. As an adult he is sturdy and not very prone to breed diseases, but watch weight, he is greedy. As a senior, kidneys and teeth. An older Russian Blue who changes favorite person or becomes clingy at night deserves a check-up.

Frequently asked questions

My Russian Blue hides as soon as people come over. Is he traumatised?

Probably not, it is the breed’s reserve. He prefers to observe from afar and chooses who he interacts with. Give him a refuge room and ask visitors not to look for him.

He only likes me and avoids my partner. How do I change that?

The partner becomes the one who plays with the wand and serves the meals, never forcing contact. The Russian Blue widens his circle through repeated calm experience, not through constraint.

My Russian Blue has suddenly become very clingy. Is that good?

Not necessarily, in a usually reserved cat. A sudden change in sociability, either way, is worth noting: hyperthyroidism, pain, stress from a recent change. A check-up if it persists.
