Why does my cat meow at night?

2 min read Updated on October 6, 2026

In shortCats are crepuscular: their activity peaks are at dawn and dusk. A cat who meows at night has often learned that it brings someone, or he is bored because his day was too quiet. In an older cat, a new, loud night-time meow can be a medical sign.

What it often means

  • A clock: if he was fed or cuddled at 5am once, the voice comes back at 5am.
  • Boredom: too little play and hunting during the day, the energy comes out at night.
  • A request for contact in a cat left alone all day.
  • In seniors: hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, pain, disorientation. The meow is then louder, more lost.

Signals to read at the same time

  • The time: always the same means a learned routine; variable and agitated means something else.
  • Where he meows: at your door, in the hallway, or facing a wall, lost.
  • His body during the day: does he play, eat and sleep normally?
  • His age and weight: a cat over ten who is losing weight and meows at night needs to be seen.

What you can do

  • A real hunting session before bed, ten minutes with a wand toy, then a meal. He eats, grooms, sleeps.
  • An automatic feeder set for dawn: the food arrives without you getting up, and he has no reason to call you.
  • Do not get up for the meow. Each response teaches it. The first nights are worse, then it fades.
  • Enrich his days: window, perch, food puzzle, two short play sessions.

When to see a vet

See a vet without waiting if night meowing is new in a cat over ten, if it is very loud and disoriented, if he drinks or urinates more, loses weight or seems unable to find his litter box. These are common signs of treatable diseases.

Frequently asked questions

My cat meows at 5am every morning. Is he hungry?

It is the learned time of the bowl, not true hunger. A feeder set for 5am cuts the link between you and food, and the meow usually disappears within one to two weeks.

My old cat meows at night while wandering. Why?

In a senior cat this is one of the most common signs of hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure or cognitive dysfunction. Blood work and a blood pressure check at the vet are the first step.

Should I let my cat sleep in the bedroom?

If it suits you both, yes. Closing the door on a cat who used to come in causes meowing for several nights. If you close it, hold firm and compensate with play and a feeder.
