Why does my cat run around like crazy in the evening?

In shortThe evening zoomies are a discharge of stored hunting energy. A cat is built for several small hunts a day; indoors, it all comes out at once, at the hour he would naturally be active. It is healthy as long as the body is loose and playful. A play session before the evening meal is often enough to absorb it.

What it often means

  • An overflow: too little stimulation during the day.
  • The twilight peak: his internal clock says it is time to hunt.
  • A post-litter ritual in many cats, probably an instinctive escape reflex.
  • More rarely, irritation: fleas, pain, hyperesthesia syndrome, especially if the run is preceded by biting at the back.

Signals to read at the same time

  • The body: arched back and sideways hops mean play; flattened ears and puffed tail mean fear.
  • The trigger: nothing visible, or a noise, a shadow, another cat.
  • What follows: he settles and grooms, or stays on alert with dilated pupils.
  • The skin on the back: if it ripples and he nibbles it before dashing off, that needs showing to a vet.

What you can do

  • Two wand-toy hunts a day, ten minutes, one before the evening meal. He eats, grooms, sleeps.
  • Vertical routes: shelves, a cat tree, so he climbs instead of charging down hallways.
  • Food puzzles to work the brain during the day.
  • Do not chase him or scold him: he will quite likely find that even more exciting.

When to see a vet

See a vet if the runs are triggered by touching his back, if he bites his tail or flanks, if the skin twitches and he seems to flee something invisible: feline hyperesthesia, parasites or pain. An older cat who starts running at night while crying deserves a check-up.

Frequently asked questions

My cat runs like crazy after using the litter box. Why?

Very common. The most likely explanation is an old reflex: get away fast from the place where the smell could attract a predator. Some cats add an obvious little satisfaction. Nothing to do.

He runs everywhere at 3am and wakes me. What should I do?

Shift his energy: intense play in the evening, a meal right after, an automatic feeder for dawn. Close the rooms where he makes the most noise and do not respond at night. Two weeks, usually.

Does an indoor cat need to run?

Yes, but in short hunting sequences rather than long runs. Three minutes of a wand toy imitating prey, with a catch at the end, are worth more than a sprint corridor.
