Why does my dog dig holes?

4 min read Updated on October 8, 2026

In shortA dog mostly digs out of boredom or excess energy, to hunt what lives underground, or to find a cool spot when it is hot. It is normal behavior, and it rewards itself: digging is fun. Less often, he is hiding a treasure, trying to escape, or showing distress about being alone. Where the hole is usually tells you which: along the fence, in the shade, at the base of a tree, by the door.

What it often means

  • Boredom and excess energy: left alone in the yard for hours, he invents a job that smells great and shows progress.
  • Hunting: moles, voles or grubs underground. He digs in one spot, pauses, listens with his head cocked, then goes back at it harder.
  • Cooling off: in hot weather, he digs in the shade to lie on cool dirt. Northern breeds like huskies are experts at it.
  • A hiding place: he buries a bone or a toy for later, and sometimes comes back to dig it up.
  • Escape or distress: holes along the fence line, or scratching at the door when he is alone, point to wanting out or to anxiety.

Signals to read at the same time

  • Location: along the fence, he wants out; in the shade, he is hot; in a line across the lawn, he is following a tunnel; by the door, he is waiting for you.
  • Timing: while you are away, right after you leave, or in front of you to get your attention.
  • His state while digging: nose down, wagging tail and sniffing pauses mean hunting or play; panting, whining and worn-down nails mean stress.
  • Other signs while you are gone: howling, damage near doors and windows, and accidents in the house go with separation anxiety, not boredom alone.

What you can do

  • Give him a spot of his own: a sandbox or a patch of loose dirt where you bury toys and treats in front of him at first, and praise him for digging there.
  • Add real activities: sniff walks, find-it games, chewing, short training sessions. A busy dog digs less.
  • In hot weather, give him shade, cool water and a cool place to lie down, and do not leave him outside in the hottest hours.
  • No mole or rodent bait in the yard: those products are toxic to dogs too, and a dog who digs will end up finding them.
  • Do not scold him over a finished hole: he will not make the connection. Interrupt him gently in the act instead, and lead him to his spot.

When to see a vet

See a vet if the digging turns frantic, if he damages his nails or pads, if he claws at floors and doors when alone, or if he eats the dirt he turns up, which can point to anemia, a digestive problem or a nutritional gap. For separation anxiety or compulsive digging, see your vet first, then a veterinary behaviorist or certified behavior consultant. If he may have eaten mole or rodent bait, it is an emergency: call your vet or an animal poison control line right away.

Frequently asked questions

Do some breeds dig more than others?

Yes. Terriers and the dachshund were bred to go underground after foxes, badgers and rodents. Northern breeds like the husky or the malamute dig readily to cool off or shelter. With these dogs, the goal is to channel the need, not erase it.

How do I stop him from digging under the fence?

Do not leave him alone in the yard for long, and look for what draws him out: another dog, a female in heat nearby, passing wildlife, a noise that scares him. In the meantime, buried wire mesh or large rocks along the base of the fence stop escapes, without fixing the cause.

My puppy digs everywhere. Will it pass?

It often decreases with age and enough activity, but it does not vanish on its own in breeds made for it. The best time to teach him his digging spot is now: every hole dug in the right place and rewarded builds the habit.

He digs at the couch or his bed. Is that the same thing?

Often he is just arranging his bed before lying down, a normal move that goes with circling. If he does it while you are away, with damage near doors and windows, look at stress instead and talk to your vet.
