What it often means
- Excitement spilling over: the doorbell, a reunion, play that ramps up. It comes from the same kind of overflow as the evening zoomies.
- Play: between dogs, especially young ones, mounting is part of play wrestling, along with chasing and rolling around.
- Stress: in a new or tense situation, some dogs hump the way others scratch or yawn, to release tension.
- A habit that pays off: humping a guest’s leg gets laughter, yelling and flailing hands. To him, that is attention.
- A sexual drive: it matters most in intact males who smell a female in heat somewhere in the neighborhood.
