Why is my dog shaking?

2 min read Updated on October 6, 2026

In shortA dog shakes for four main reasons: he is cold, he is scared or stressed, he is very excited, or he is in pain. In small breeds, trembling is almost a way of life. What settles it is the rest of the body and the context: a dog shaking while waiting for his ball has nothing to do with a dog shaking prostrate in a corner.

What it often means

  • Cold: small dogs and short coats shiver from 60°F. Real, not psychological.
  • Fear or stress: thunderstorm, fireworks, vet, car, loud voice.
  • Excitement: the ball, the guests, the bowl. The body overflows.
  • Pain or illness: arthritis, belly, poisoning, fever, neurological disorders.

Signals to read at the same time

  • The context: temperature, noise, what just happened.
  • The rest of the body: wagging tail and soft mouth is excitement; tucked tail and flat ears, fear; prostrate and stiff, pain.
  • The location: whole body, or one leg, the jaw, the head only.
  • What comes with it: drooling, vomiting, wobbly gait, pale gums.

What you can do

  • Cold: a coat is not a whim for a small dog or a short coat.
  • Fear: a quiet room, background noise, your calm presence, without forcing or over-protecting him.
  • Excitement: bring him down before giving the ball. Wait until he settles.
  • If you cannot find a cause and it lasts, it is a consultation, not a wait.

When to see a vet

Emergency if the shaking comes with vomiting, drooling, pale or bluish gums, a drunken gait, seizures, or if he may have swallowed a toxin (chocolate, xylitol, rat poison, plants). Also consult for new trembling at rest, especially in an older dog.

Frequently asked questions

My Chihuahua shakes all the time. Is that normal?

Very small dogs tremble a lot: cold, excitement, fast metabolism. It is common, but still have blood sugar and temperature checked at the vet if it is permanent, and dress him in winter.

His back legs tremble when he gets up. Is it age?

Often muscle weakness or arthritis, sometimes back pain. Age is not a disease: treatments exist that relieve. Have him examined.

He trembles in his sleep. Is he having a nightmare?

Twitching, paddling and little cries during REM sleep are normal: he is dreaming. Do not wake him abruptly. Violent, stiff jerks with drooling and loss of urine, however, suggest a seizure.
