Why does my cat follow me to the bathroom?

In shortThe bathroom gathers everything a cat loves: a small cool room with smooth surfaces, running water, a door that closes (hence intriguing) and a motionless human, sitting at his height, finally available. Following you to the bathroom is curiosity and attachment, not surveillance. Many cats have also learned it is the best moment for a stroke.

What it often means

  • The closed door: a cat wants to know what happens behind it, especially if he is excluded.
  • Your availability: sitting, still, no screen, you are finally at his height.
  • The room: cool tiles, faucet, bathtub, towels. A playground.
  • Routine: every morning, same time, same room. He gets there before you.

Signals to read at the same time

  • What he does: he rubs and purrs, that is affiliation; he watches the water run, curiosity.
  • Whether he follows you everywhere else too: general attachment, normal in many cats.
  • If he meows insistently behind the closed door: he hates being excluded, not necessarily anxious.
  • A change: a cat who suddenly sticks to you everywhere has a reason.

What you can do

  • Let him in if it does not bother you: it is a contact moment he enjoys.
  • Use it for a short stroke on the head: he is looking for it.
  • If you want privacy, close the door before he arrives, and ignore the meowing. He gets used to it.
  • Make it safe: products closed, lid down for a kitten, no blind cord within reach.

When to see a vet

No medical reason here, unless your cat suddenly spends a lot of time in the bathroom looking for faucet or bathtub water: new thirst suggests kidney, diabetes or thyroid. Consult.

Frequently asked questions

My cat drinks from the bathroom faucet. Why?

Running water seems fresher and safer to him than the still water of a bowl, an inherited instinct. A fountain solves the problem. If the thirst is new and strong, vet.

He scratches the door and meows if I close it. Is he anxious?

He is mostly excluded, and he does not like it. If the rest of the time he is settled and independent, it is not anxiety. Stay consistent: door closed, no response, and he will stop.

Why does he like lying in the sink?

The shape hugs his body, the ceramic is cool in summer, and it is high up with a view of the door. For a cat, it is a perfect bed.
