Why does my dog follow me everywhere?

2 min read Updated on October 6, 2026

In shortFollowing is normal for a social animal: he stays with his group, and you are his group. Some breeds add a working instinct (herders, companion dogs) and many dogs have learned that following you pays, a stroke, a dropped crumb. It becomes a problem when he cannot stay alone for one minute without distress: then it is no longer attachment, it is dependence.

What it often means

  • Attachment: being where you are means being safe.
  • Learning: the kitchen means crumbs; the couch, strokes.
  • Boredom: you are the most interesting thing in the house.
  • Anxiety: if he pants, whines or panics when a door closes between you.

Signals to read at the same time

  • His body while following: loose and curious, or tense and worried.
  • What he does when you close a door: he lies down, or he scratches and whines.
  • His ability to stay alone in a room when you are home.
  • A recent change: a dog who suddenly becomes clingy has a reason, sometimes physical.

What you can do

  • If it is serene, enjoy it: it is dog love.
  • Teach him a resting place that is not at your feet, with a chew, and reward staying there.
  • Sometimes close a door for a few minutes while you are home, so absence becomes ordinary.
  • Give him one independent activity a day: sniffing, chewing, a puzzle.

When to see a vet

A dog who suddenly becomes clingy, especially an older one, may be in pain, see or hear less well, or be losing his bearings. Consult if it is new and comes with restlessness at night, panting at rest or disorientation.

Frequently asked questions

My dog follows me even to the bathroom. Is that normal?

Yes, and it is very common. You are in a small room with the door closed, which intrigues him. If you want privacy, teach him to wait outside with a treat. He will take it well.

Why does he follow me and not my partner?

Often because you feed, walk and play. He follows the one who makes things happen. It changes if your partner takes over some of those roles.

Is it separation anxiety?

Not if you are there. Separation anxiety shows in your absence: crying, destruction, drooling. A velcro dog can be perfectly fine alone. Film an absence to find out.
