Why does my dog howl?

In shortYour dog howls to call out over a distance, a legacy of the wolf: it is his way of telling his group “here I am”. He mostly does it in response to a high, drawn-out sound (sirens, an instrument, another dog), when he is alone and looking for you, or because it has already earned your attention. Some breeds, like Huskies and hounds, howl far more than others. New howling, at night or while you are out, is worth tracking down.

What it often means

  • A response to a high, drawn-out sound: fire truck sirens, a harmonica, singing, or another dog howling in the distance. He joins the chorus.
  • A contact call: home alone or separated from you, he howls to find his group, sometimes within the first few minutes.
  • A learned habit: you laughed, sang along or opened the door when he howled, so he does it again.
  • Breed: Huskies and Malamutes, like Beagles and other hounds, howl or bay far more than the average dog.
  • More rarely, pain, confusion in an older dog, or the scent of a female in heat for an unneutered male.

Signals to read at the same time

  • The trigger: a passing siren, your departure, nightfall, or nothing you can identify.
  • His body while howling: head up, body relaxed, he stops when the sound stops; or restless, he paces and scratches at the door.
  • When it starts: within minutes of your leaving and without letup, distress is likely; as a siren goes by, it is a social reflex.
  • How long it lasts: a few seconds after the siren, or tens of minutes without being able to stop.
  • What comes with it: drooling, pee, damage when you get home, or in an older dog, disorientation and a flipped sleep schedule.

What you can do

  • For a siren, let it pass: the howling ends with the sound, no need to step in.
  • Film your departures with a phone propped facing the door: you will know whether he howls for two minutes or an hour, and with what other signs.
  • Do not scold him when you get back: he will not make the link, and dread of your return would add to the dread of your leaving.
  • For attention howling, answer calm, not howling: wait for a few seconds of silence before opening the door or going to him.
  • Before you leave, a sniffing walk and then something to chew help a bored dog; if he panics, that is not enough, and our guide to separation anxiety takes over.

When to see a vet

See a vet if the howling is new and happens at night in an older dog, or if he seems lost, stares at walls or no longer recognizes places: cognitive decline, deafness or pain are possible. A sharp cry when he is touched, gets up or lies down signals pain. And if howling while you are out comes with destruction, drooling, pee or scratches at the door, a vet first, then a veterinary behaviorist or certified behavior consultant: separation anxiety can be treated.

Frequently asked questions

Do dogs howl when someone is about to die?

No. It is an old superstition with no evidence behind it. A long, mournful howl usually means loneliness, a distant sound or a call to the group. If the howling is new, especially in an older dog, look for a cause instead: being left alone, pain, confusion.

Do sirens hurt my dog’s ears?

Nothing shows that a siren heard from a distance hurts him. A dog who is hurt or frightened by a noise runs, hides or trembles; a dog who howls with his head up and a relaxed body is more likely answering a sound that resembles a howl. If he hides and shakes, that is a fear of noises, which is handled differently.

Why does my dog howl at night?

At night, sounds carry far: neighborhood dogs, sirens, wildlife. A dog who sleeps far from you may also be calling, and a puppy in his first nights even more so. Check that he does not need to go out. In an older dog, new night-time howling is a reason to see the vet.

Can I teach my dog to stop howling?

You will not erase such a natural behavior, but you can reduce it: deal with the cause (loneliness, boredom), reward quiet and stop responding to the howl. Some dogs even learn to howl on cue, which then helps teach quiet. Anti-bark collars treat the sound, not the cause, and add fear.
