What it often means
- Heat: an unspayed female yowls, rolls and rubs for several days, and the intact males in the neighborhood answer.
- A rival: facing another cat, in the yard or through the glass, he yowls, growls and freezes, to avoid a fight or get ready for one.
- Stress or frustration: in the car, in the carrier, after a move, or at a door he wants to get through.
- Aging: in older cats, nighttime yowling can come from cognitive decline, deafness, or an illness such as hyperthyroidism or high blood pressure.
- Sharp pain: he cries nonstop, hides, holds up a paw, or keeps straining in the litter box with nothing coming out.
