Why does my dog lick me?

2 min read Updated on October 6, 2026

In shortLicking is a social gesture inherited from puppyhood: licking the mother to be fed, licking adults to appease. In an adult, it mixes affection, the taste of your skin, a request for attention and, often, appeasement when you are tense or leaning over him. It is normal and rather a good sign, unless it becomes frantic or impossible to interrupt.

What it often means

  • Affiliation: he maintains the bond, as he would with another dog in his group.
  • Taste: your skin is salty after exercise, and your hands smell of what you ate.
  • Appeasement: he licks you when you stare at him, when you cry, when you argue.
  • A request: it has already worked to get attention, a stroke or a game.

Signals to read at the same time

  • The body: loose and relaxed is affection; stiff with quick licks is appeasement.
  • The context: when you come home, during a cuddle, or when voices rise at home.
  • The ability to stop: a dog who licks and cannot disengage is anxious or compulsive.
  • What else he licks: floors, walls, the air, himself non-stop. That is no longer social.

What you can do

  • If you like it, let him: it is a good moment for him.
  • If you want less: get up calmly and offer something else. Do not scold, he would lick more to appease.
  • During tension at home, lower your voice: he is telling you the mood weighs on him.
  • Wash hands covered in cream or products: some are toxic for him.

When to see a vet

See a vet if licking becomes frantic, if he licks floors, walls or the air, if he licks himself until the skin is red, or if it appears suddenly with nausea, swallowing or drooling. Reflux, digestive pain and compulsive disorders often hide behind it.
